Cosimo I: Duke of Florence?

Cosimo I was one of the later Medici. Why does he take a secondary position when compared to predecessors like Cosimo il Vecchio and Lorenzo the Magnificent? Not only is he lesser known, but has also become infamous and the epitome of tyrant. I've read a biography on him and this is certainly not true.
